How do you capture the soul of a coast where sunsets write the sky’s final love letter?

The air hummed with salt and the song of the sea as I lifted my drone into the golden dusk above Clearwater Beach, Florida. Below, the iconic Clearwater Pier stretched like a hand reaching into the Gulf of Mexico, welcoming the day’s last light. They call this place Florida’s Best Beach, where the water turns to molten gold at sunset, and every grain of sand holds a secret.

Photographing this landmark from the air wasn’t easy. Between the unpredictable coastal winds and FAA restrictions near Tampa’s busy airspace, each second in the sky felt borrowed, a fragile dance between permission and patience. But this pier, known as Pier 60, deserved that risk. It’s more than wood and nails—it’s a gathering place, a marketplace of sunsets, where artists and dreamers come nightly to honor the fading day.

I hovered just long enough to frame the moment. The pier lit up below like a lantern guiding wanderers home, the waters shimmering in hues of orange, lavender, and indigo. Behind me, the city’s skyline whispered of bustling Tampa, but out here, only the rhythm of waves spoke.

Clearwater has worn many nicknames—The Sparkling City, The Jewel of the Gulf—but tonight, it felt like a prayer in motion. As the sun dipped below the horizon, I felt the weight of its history, from its Calusa roots to its rise as a beacon for sun-seekers. Every detail in this photograph holds that story.
