What does it mean to capture the essence of a place where faith has stood the test of time?

It was a cool September morning, and I found myself standing before New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville, Tennessee. The soft light of dawn was just beginning to break over the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, casting a serene glow on the stone walls of the church. The building stood strong, its tower rising toward the heavens, seemingly in conversation with the clouds.

As I prepared to capture the moment with my drone, the complexities of modern technology became apparent. Geo-fencing in the area sometimes made flying tricky, especially near historic sites like this. But I was determined to capture the church from the perfect angle—one that would showcase its timeless beauty against the backdrop of the mountains. With patience, I found an opening, and the drone soared into the air, giving me a breathtaking view of the scene below.

This wasn’t just any church. Almost two hundred forty years ago, in 1786, Reverend Archibald Scott journeyed down what was known as “the great War Trail” to establish a place of worship. The history of this church is intertwined with the history of Maryville itself. Reverend Scott left behind the comfort of Augusta County, Virginia, to bring faith and community to this frontier land. As the drone captured sweeping shots of the church, I thought of the countless people who had walked these grounds over the centuries, their lives forever touched by this place.

The stone façade, bathed in the golden light of sunrise, told a story of endurance, of a community that has stood together through generations. The quiet stillness of the morning was interrupted only by the gentle rustling of leaves and the hum of my drone, a reminder that though time moves on, some things remain constant.

Photographing New Providence Presbyterian Church was more than just capturing an image. It was about documenting a piece of history that continues to inspire faith and unity. In the heart of this small Tennessee town, the church stands as a symbol of steadfast devotion, with the Great Smoky Mountains bearing witness to its lasting legacy.
