Is it the destination—or the journey through the storm—that transforms you?
I’ll never forget the moment the clouds parted over the Old Man of Storr. After a 90-minute climb through sheets of rain, icy sleet, and even a brief stinging hailstorm, I reached this sacred vantage point above Loch Leathan and Loch Fada, overlooking the Sound of Raasay. My boots sank into soaked earth. My breath steamed in the Highland air. But when the light cracked through the sky and set the hills ablaze in gold, everything else fell silent.
They call this place “the spine of Skye,” and locals speak of the towering rock as if it were alive—a weathered guardian watching over generations. Its silhouette is unmistakable, rising like a sentinel over the Trotternish Ridge, cloaked in legend and storm. The island itself whispers, “An t-Eilean Sgitheanach”—the Misty Isle. Every gust, every echo of dripping rock, every raven’s cry seemed to agree.
Capturing this image felt less like photography and more like reverence. I wasn’t just witnessing beauty—I was being invited into it. I felt small, yet somehow deeply seen.
