Can patience and faith truly lead to the perfect photograph?
Before dawn in Amboseli’s chill, I watch a red hot-air balloon rise silently above the savanna—a drifting ember against the pale sky. Below, a family of elephants ambles toward a lone flat-topped acacia. Beyond them, Mount Kilimanjaro—Ol Doinyo Oibor (‘White Mountain’)—looms, its snow-capped peak glowing in the newborn sun.
Golden light spills across a tangerine dawn sky. The plains shimmer with dew on salt-crusted earth. The air smells of damp grass and woodsmoke. In the hush, a lion’s last roar fades into the dawn chorus of birds.
I’ve waited many dawns for a moment like this. Photography demands patience. Every element must align—elephants in frame, the balloon lit by dawn, Kilimanjaro clear of cloud—and this morning, by some miracle, it does. I steady my lens and whisper a prayer of thanks. In the stillness, a psalm rises in me: “From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” My soul swells with worship.
Capturing these endangered giants in their home is an honor I approach reverently, for through my lens I see not just an image but an eternal witness of Creation’s splendor. These elephants carry the legacy of a wild Eden. The Maasai people, clad in red shukas, have safeguarded these plains for generations. Their reverence for all life, born of God's blessing, inspires me.
With a click I capture the moment, and joy floods me – not pride, but humble wonder at God’s masterpiece. The sun climbs higher now, painting the savanna in His promise of a new day. I lower my camera, eyes misted with gratitude. In the holy hush of morning, here in the Land of Giants, I have seen the Creator’s hand, and my soul sings, ashe oleng – thank You, Lord.
