What does it take to capture the spirit of a team, a city, and its legacy in one perfect shot?
The soft amber glow of the setting sun spilled across Citi Field, the “Home of the Amazin’ Mets,” as the hum of distant traffic from the Van Wyck Expressway mixed with the salty breeze off Flushing Bay. I stood on the perimeter of the stadium grounds, prepping my drone for its flight. The FAA had authorized my request, but even with approval, navigating the airspace near LaGuardia Airport was no small feat.
The anticipation buzzed in the air like the excitement of a ninth-inning rally. The stadium’s brick façade, inspired by Ebbets Field, stood as a beacon of the team’s storied past, while its modern features represented a resilient, hopeful future. For Mets fans, Citi Field wasn’t just a venue—it was a place of dreams, heartbreaks, and unforgettable triumphs. The echoes of “Ya Gotta Believe!” seemed to reverberate through the very bricks of the Jackie Robinson Rotunda.
As my drone ascended, the view expanded, revealing the shimmering expanse of Flushing Bay and the patchwork of Queens neighborhoods. The emerald green of the field below glowed in contrast to the deepening oranges and purples of the sky. I maneuvered the drone carefully, capturing the symmetry of the stadium framed against the tranquil bay and bustling cityscape.
Sunset photography is never simple, but tonight was a symphony of challenges. Balancing the fading light, navigating airspace restrictions, and timing the golden hues to reflect off the stadium’s façade—all while ensuring the shot captured the soul of the Mets—was a dance of precision. Every click of the camera felt like a step closer to encapsulating the enduring spirit of a team and its fans.
As the sun sank below the horizon, casting the final strokes of gold and crimson, the scene felt alive with history. From the Miracle Mets of 1969 to the highs and lows of Shea Stadium, this was a franchise built on perseverance. The shot was more than a photograph; it was a tribute to a legacy of resilience and the undying hope that defines every Mets fan.
When I landed the drone, I took a moment to soak it all in—the hum of the city, the quiet lapping of the bay, and the glow of a stadium steeped in love and loyalty. I packed up my gear, my heart full of gratitude for a perfect evening spent capturing the essence of Queens and the Mets.
