What is it about a reflection that stirs the soul, offering us a glimpse of something both familiar and entirely new?
Standing at Sentinel Bridge, I marveled at the way Half Dome glowed like molten gold under the setting sun. The colors seemed to burn against the sky, casting a perfect reflection on the still waters of the Merced River. Everything was in balance—the granite majesty of Half Dome, the river’s gentle flow, and the sturdy bridge grounding the entire scene. The silence of the valley was profound, broken only by the soft rustle of trees and the occasional chirp of a distant bird. It was as if time itself had slowed to allow this moment to stretch into eternity.
Photographing this iconic view of Yosemite was a complex dance. As the sun dipped lower, every second changed the light, casting shadows that stretched and shifted over the landscape. Sunset photography is always a race against time, but tonight it felt different. The reflection of Half Dome in the Merced River made the challenge even more thrilling. Framing both the majestic dome and its mirrored image in the same shot was tricky, especially with the gentle wind beginning to ripple the water’s surface. But I knew I had found a perspective rarely captured—a vantage point that connected me deeply to the spirit of Yosemite.
Yosemite, “the land of shining mountains,” holds a history as rich as its beauty. Half Dome stands as its guardian, a geological wonder carved by glaciers. The Ahwahneechee people, who lived here long before this became a national park, called it “Tis-sa-ack,” the face of a woman. And here, on this calm evening, I could feel the echoes of all who had come before me, drawn to the power of this place, just as I was.
The sun’s final rays kissed Half Dome goodbye, and in that fleeting moment, I pressed the shutter.
