What does it feel like to watch a new day unfold from a place touched by eternity?
Standing at Tunnel View in Yosemite, I watched the first light of dawn break over the towering granite walls. The valley below, still cloaked in darkness, began to stir, and the beauty that had been hidden in the shadows now emerged as the sun’s rays illuminated the peaks. El Capitan, steadfast and grand, stood to the left, and Half Dome, timeless and regal, rose in the distance. Bridalveil Fall danced in the morning light, and the Merced River carved its path through the valley floor, as it has done for centuries.
Capturing the sunrise here was no simple task. The light changed rapidly, shifting from soft hues of purple and pink to the golden brilliance that highlighted the ridges of the Cathedrals. This vantage point, one I had never seen captured before, was a gift. It allowed me to see this “Incomparable Valley” in all its untouched glory, a view once described by John Muir as “nature’s cathedral.”
The history of this place is palpable in every breath. The Ahwahneechee called it “Ahwahnee,” meaning “big mouth,” a fitting description for this gaping valley. Later, John Muir would pen his love for this “grand cathedral of nature,” forever embedding Yosemite into the American consciousness. It’s a place where nature reigns supreme, where the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada mountains collides with the sky. As I set up my camera, I was reminded of why this place is called “The Incomparable Valley.”
When the sun finally crested the horizon, it was as if the valley exhaled, coming alive in golden light. I stood there, fully immersed in the grandeur of Yosemite, knowing this moment would stay with me forever.
