What is it about abandoned cabins in remote woods that draws us, whispering secrets from a time long gone?
Nestled among the vibrant yellows and oranges of the autumn aspens, the old wooden cabin seemed like a relic from a forgotten past. Perched on the edge of the Million Dollar Highway, just outside Ironton, Colorado, this lone structure stood as a sentinel amidst the grandeur of the San Juan Mountains. The air was crisp, the morning sun casting golden light over the hills, while shadows danced in the groves. This was no ordinary road—it’s called the “Scenic Overlook of the Rockies” and the “Highway of Legends,” a place where rugged beauty and history collide.
I set up my drone, heart racing. Capturing the perfect shot was no simple task, not with the thin mountain air and rapidly changing light. With each pass, I maneuvered carefully, watching as the drone’s shadow flitted like a bird over the tree canopy. It was as if the aspens were showing off, their brilliant colors standing in stark contrast against the cabin’s dark wood. It felt surreal, being part of a scene that seemed frozen in time.
This stretch of the Million Dollar Highway, known as the “Switzerland of America,” is filled with stories of miners, pioneers, and wanderers who dared to tame the wild west. The cabin, once home to a miner or prospector seeking fortune, now sits silently, a symbol of resilience and dreams chased. Photographing this piece of history, I felt connected to the heartbeat of Colorado—the pulse of adventure, perseverance, and beauty that makes the San Juans legendary.
