Have you ever witnessed a place where history, beauty, and academia meet under the glow of a September morning?
The cool morning air wrapped around me as I stood before Anderson Hall at Maryville College, nestled against the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. As the sky blushed with the first hints of daylight, the stately brick building seemed to come alive, its windows catching the soft glow of the rising sun. Anderson Hall stood tall, a symbol of over 200 years of academic tradition.
Setting up my drone was tricky. With classes just about to start, I had to navigate the buzzing campus, mindful of early risers walking to class. The quiet hum of the drone blended with the morning sounds of nature—the rustle of leaves, birds awakening in the trees, and the occasional echo of footsteps. Sunrise was the perfect time to capture the heart of this historic campus, but it also meant working quickly as the day’s energy began to stir.
Anderson Hall is more than just a building. It’s the heart of Maryville College, established in 1819. One of the oldest educational institutions in the South, it has stood the test of time, weathering the Civil War, the Great Depression, and countless other challenges. This building, named after Isaac Anderson, who founded the college, has watched generations of students walk through its doors. It felt like I was capturing a piece of that history, preserving a moment in time for future generations to see.
As the sun rose higher, casting golden light on the campus, I felt connected not only to the present but also to the generations who had walked these grounds before me. Photographing Anderson Hall was about more than just a beautiful shot. It was about capturing the essence of a place where knowledge, history, and community come together.
