What does it feel like to capture history, beauty, and memory in a single frame?
On a cool September morning, I found myself standing in front of the majestic Blount County Courthouse in Maryville, Tennessee, with the Smoky Mountains etched softly against the horizon. The early sunrise bathed the brick façade in gold, casting long shadows across the courtyard. The air was crisp, with only the faintest stir of wind as if nature itself was waiting for me to take my shot.
As the first light crept over the horizon, I set up my drone, eager to capture the courthouse from a new angle. Yet, I quickly encountered a challenge—geo-fencing restricted flights around certain government buildings, including this one. It’s moments like these that make drone photography in cities a dance of patience and ingenuity. So, I found another way—working with the angles I could achieve from ground level and discovering the intricate details that made the courthouse so grand.
The war memorial stood proudly in front of the courthouse, the flags gently flapping in the morning breeze, their reflection in the glass doors standing as a quiet tribute to those who served. It felt like time stood still as I clicked away, the courthouse, built in the early 1900s, standing tall as a sentinel over the town. Its clock tower, red-roofed and weathered, had witnessed the city’s unfolding history for decades. I couldn’t help but think of the many mornings like this one it had seen.
Photographing such a grand structure is more than just capturing its physical form; it’s about immersing yourself in its story. The courthouse wasn’t just a building but a living part of Maryville’s identity—an emblem of justice, history, and community.
