"How does one capture the essence of freedom from an island that once defined captivity?"
As the sun dipped below the horizon, I stood on Alcatraz, the island of former imprisonment, now my perch for capturing freedom's face. The skyline of San Francisco, bathed in the ethereal light of dusk, stretched before me, each building aglow with stories untold.
With my camera steady, I began the intricate dance of a 7 minute exposure, each tick of the clock a brushstroke on the canvas of time. The city's motto, "Golden in Peace, Iron in War," resonated within me, a silent chant that rhythmically aligned with the shutter's click.
The briny scent of the bay mingled with the faint aroma of eucalyptus from the distant shores, the air alive with the sounds of sea birds calling to the wind that whispered the city's slogan of, “It All Starts Here.” The taste of salt hung heavy on my tongue, a poignant reminder of the ocean's enduring presence.
As the exposure unfolded, the city transformed before my lens, light streaking across the frame, capturing the city’s pulse—a pulse that once beat in stark contrast to the stillness of Alcatraz. The skyline, a vibrant testament to resilience, seemed to echo with the collective heartbeat of a thousand dreams.
Photographing the skyline from this vantage point was not just about the image; it was a spiritual journey, a reconciliation of past and present, a witness to the city that rises golden in peace and stands resolute as iron in the face of adversity.
