ALMOST FROZE TO DEATH! (AND HOW MY WIFE AND I SURVIVED!)

As a landscape photographer, I had always dreamed of capturing the beauty of the Red Rock Amphitheater in Colorado. I had seen a similar image on a metal print in Boulder, but it was too expensive to purchase and they didn't ship. So I made the decision to take the picture myself, so that I could have it on my office wall at home.

I set out at 4:30am, well before sunrise, and drove about an hour to reach the amphitheater. It was a freezing morning, one of the first frosts of the season, and my wife and I had to huddle together to stay warm. We had not packed accordingly and were paying the price for our mistake.

The night was pitch black, with no moon, and we had to use flashlights to hike up to the top of the amphitheater. The wind howled through the mountain passes, but as we reached the top, it quieted down to a complete silence. The air was cool and crisp, and almost smelled like snow.

As we waited for the sun to rise, disaster struck. I had begun shooting well before dawn to test the conditions and lighting, and my camera mirror "locked up," rendering it useless just before the sun crested the horizon. I was filled with despair, knowing that I had completely wrecked the entire shoot.

But then I remembered that a fellow photographer with a YouTube channel might have a solution. Thankfully, he was able to walk me through the steps to fix my camera, and I was able to get everything working just in time to capture the perfect daybreak.

The vibrant yellow and orange sun finally rose, filling the mountain range with a warm and gorgeous light. I was in the right place at the right time, with charged batteries, and was able to capture the image perfectly. It was a moment of pure joy and fulfillment as the picture appeared on the back of my camera.

I had always hoped and dreamed of capturing a spectacular and dramatic version of this scene, and I was thrilled to have finally done it justice. I have now shipped over 50 prints of this image to clients on the East Coast, West Coast, and even to an art collector in London, England. It was so fulfilling to be able to share the remarkable beauty of Denver with others around the world who, like me, had never found the right shot.
